Boston Tea Party On December 16, 1773, in Boston, Massachusetts, the historic political protest of the Boston Tea Party unfolded. It was a pivotal moment in the colonists' resistance against British taxation policies, laying the groundwork for the American Revolution. The root cause of dissatisfaction was the imposition of various taxes by the British government on the American colonies without their consent. The Tea Act of 1773, a significant point of contention, granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies, allowing them to undercut local tea merchants by selling tea at a reduced price. Between 7 and 10 p.m. on that eventful night, a substantial group of men, led by the Sons of Liberty, boarded the ships in the harbor. Nearly £10,000 worth of tea, equivalent to around 46 tons, was cast into Boston Harbor. In response, the British government enforced the 1774 "Intolerable Act," also known as the Boston Port Act, resulting in the closure of the harbor. This intensified the colonists' resentment, solidifying their opposition to British rule and setting the stage for a series of events that culminated in the American Revolution in Massachusetts.
