The Walking Liberty design, created by Adolph A. Weinman and introduced in 1916, was one of two designs he submitted to the United States Mint that year. Both of his designs were ultimately chosen for different denominations.
Originally featured on the US Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947, this design was reintroduced in 1986 on the American Silver Eagle bullion coin, where it continues to be featured on the obverse today.
